Overview
The Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) tool allows users to securely reset their OneID password without contacting the IT Service Desk. To complete the password reset process, you must have access to at least two authentication methods previously registered to your account.
Before You Begin
Important:
- Your account must be enrolled in Microsoft Multifactor Authentication (MFA) with at least 2 registered methods.
- If you no longer have access to your registered authentication methods, contact the IT Service Desk for help resetting your OneID password.
Step 1: Access the Password Reset Portal
Navigate to forgotoneid.ncat.edu. Enter your OneID username and complete the CAPTCHA verification. Click Next.

Step 2: Select Password Reset
Select I forgot my password and click Next.

Step 3: Complete the First Verification Method
Select one of your available verification methods and follow the prompts:
- Text my mobile phone
- Call my mobile phone
- Call my office phone
- Approve a notification on my authenticator app
- Enter a code from my authenticator app
Depending on your registered authentication methods, the options displayed may differ from the examples shown in this article.

Step 4: Complete the Second Verification Method
After successfully completing the first verification method, select a different verification method and follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: You must successfully complete two verification methods before you can reset your password.
Step 5: Create a New Password
Enter your new password, confirm it, and click Finish to complete the password reset process.

OneID Password Requirements
Your password must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum of 16 characters
- Include characters from at least three of the following categories:
- Uppercase letters (A-Z)
- Lowercase letters (a-z)
- Numbers (0-9)
- Special characters
- Passwords expire every 360 days
- Previously used passwords cannot be reused
- Passwords used for personal accounts should not be used for university accounts
- Passwords cannot contain your first name, middle name, last name, or OneID username
Troubleshooting
I did not receive a text message or phone call
- Verify that you entered the correct phone number.
- Ensure your mobile device has service.
- Wait a few minutes and try again.
I did not receive a Microsoft Authenticator notification
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app manually.
- Verify notifications are enabled on your device.
- Select another verification method if available.
I no longer have access to my registered verification methods
Contact the IT Service Desk for assistance resetting your authentication methods.
My password is not being accepted
- Verify the password meets all complexity requirements.
- Ensure the password does not contain your name or OneID username.
- Confirm the password has not been used previously.
