Academic Technology Tools and Access for Faculty and Staff

Learn how to access and use university-supported technology tools for course delivery, accessibility, video, collaboration, assessments, surveys, and professional development.

Overview

North Carolina A&T provides faculty and staff with academic technology tools that support teaching, learning, course development, accessibility, video creation, virtual instruction, collaboration, assessments, surveys, and professional development.

Access varies by tool. Some tools are available directly through university sign-in, some must be accessed within a Canvas course, and others require a license, installation, consultation, or approval from Instructional Technology Training and Development (ITTD).

Plan and Test Before Using a Tool

Open and test required tools before using them with students or during a scheduled event. Confirm access, licensing, course integration, links, permissions, audio, video, student visibility, and accessibility before publishing an activity.

Before Using Academic Technology Tools

Confirm that your OneID@ncat.edu username and OneID password work.
Confirm access to the university’s required multifactor authentication method.
Use a currently supported web browser and operating system.
Install available browser, operating-system, and application updates.
Confirm whether the tool is available directly or must be opened from Canvas.
Verify that the required university or departmental license is available.
Test course links using Student View when applicable.
Test your webcam, microphone, speakers, and internet connection.
Confirm that students can see and access the activity.
Review the accessibility of files, videos, images, and activities.
Provide students with clear access, submission, and technical-requirement instructions.
Identify an alternative activity or communication method in case the tool is unavailable.
Do not share passwords, verification codes, license keys, or installation passwords.

Recommended: Complete the activity from a student perspective before publishing it. A link that works for the instructor may not automatically be visible or available to students.

Canvas: Courses, Assignments, Grades, and Communication

Canvas is North Carolina A&T’s learning management system beginning Fall 2026. Faculty may use Canvas to organize course content, communicate with students, collect assignments, administer assessments, provide feedback, record grades, and connect approved academic tools.

Access Canvas

Go to ncat.instructure.com.
Sign in using your OneID@ncat.edu username and OneID password.
Complete multifactor authentication if prompted.
Select Courses and then All Courses to review available course shells.

Before Publishing a Course

Confirm that you are working in the correct course and section.
Review course navigation and organize content into clearly labeled modules.
Update the syllabus, instructor information, due dates, and availability dates.
Review assignments, discussions, quizzes, and grade settings.
Test files, links, videos, publisher tools, and external applications.
Review migrated content for accuracy and accessibility.
Use Student View to confirm what students will see.
Publish the course and all required content when ready.

Accessibility and Inclusive Course Content

Ally

Ally reviews eligible course files for accessibility issues and provides instructors with accessibility indicators, feedback, and step-by-step remediation guidance. Ally may also generate alternative file formats for students.

Using Ally as an Instructor

Review the accessibility indicator associated with each eligible course file.
Select the indicator to open the instructor feedback panel.
Review the identified issue and recommended correction.
Replace or update inaccessible files when needed.
Review the course accessibility report when available.
Confirm that images include meaningful alternative text.
Use headings, lists, tables, links, and color appropriately.
Provide captions and transcripts for required multimedia.

Important: An automated accessibility score does not replace a complete accessibility review. Faculty remain responsible for reviewing course materials and addressing reported barriers.

Students cannot see instructor accessibility indicators. Students may see an Alternative Formats option when alternative versions of a file are available.

Video, Recording, and Multimedia Tools

Panopto

Panopto is the university’s video content management system. Faculty and staff can record, upload, organize, manage, and securely share instructional or university-related videos.

Faculty may use Panopto to:

Record lectures, demonstrations, tutorials, and course introductions.
Upload and organize instructional videos.
Embed videos in Canvas courses.
Create video quizzes and assignments when available.
Provide students with access to course recordings.
Review available video-engagement analytics.

Staff may use Panopto for approved training, onboarding, seminars, presentations, guest speakers, workshops, and department communications.

Direct access: Go to ncat.hosted.panopto.com. Confirm that NCAT OneID appears in the sign-in menu and sign in using OneID credentials.

Canvas access: Open the applicable Canvas course and use the available Panopto integration or course folder.

Recording privacy: Before recording students, guests, meetings, or presentations, consider university privacy, FERPA, accessibility, consent, copyright, and records-retention requirements. Limit access to the intended audience.

Camtasia

Camtasia is screen-recording and video-editing software that can be used to create tutorials, demonstrations, course introductions, training videos, presentations, and other multimedia content.

Record a computer screen, application, presentation, or website.
Add narration, captions, titles, transitions, callouts, and other effects.
Edit recordings before publishing them.
Export finished content for an approved video or course platform.

ITTD manages a limited number of Camtasia licenses for faculty. Contact ITTD at (336) 285-4499 to ask about availability.

GoReact

GoReact is a video assessment tool that enables students to record or upload presentations, performances, demonstrations, and other skill-based assignments. Faculty and peers may provide time-coded text, audio, or video feedback.

Create the activity from the supported course integration.
Choose the activity type and recording requirements.
Configure feedback, peer-review, due-date, and submission settings.
Test the activity before making it available.
Provide students with recording and submission instructions.

Mediasite Transition

Mediasite recording and uploading capabilities concluded May 31, 2026. Use of Mediasite as the university’s enterprise video solution concludes July 31, 2026.

New content should be created and stored in Panopto. ITS and Panopto are coordinating the migration of existing Mediasite content into Panopto. Contact ITTD for migration questions or assistance locating content.

Virtual Instruction, Meetings, and Appointments

Zoom and Class

Zoom and Class may be used for live online instruction, office hours, presentations, meetings, breakout activities, and other synchronous interactions.

Class adds teaching and engagement features to the Zoom experience. Available functionality may vary according to the course, application version, and license.

Schedule the session using the approved university account or course tool.
Review meeting security, lobby, participant, recording, and screen-sharing settings.
Provide students with the meeting link and participation expectations.
Test cameras, microphones, speakers, screen sharing, polls, and breakout rooms.
Identify a co-host or backup plan for high-impact sessions.
Do not post restricted course meeting links publicly.

Class for Web: ncat.class.com

Microsoft Bookings

Microsoft Bookings allows faculty and staff to create appointment types and publish scheduling links for students, colleagues, and other participants.

Bookings may be useful for:

Student appointments and office hours
Advising or consultation sessions
Training and support appointments
Department or program scheduling
Individual or group appointment types

Review appointment duration, availability, location or meeting-link information, confirmation messages, staff assignments, and cancellation settings before publishing a Bookings page.

Microsoft Bookings is accessed through the university’s Microsoft 365 environment. Training may be available through ITTD or learn.ncat.edu.

Engagement, Collaboration, and Attendance Tools

Padlet

Padlet is a collaborative platform for creating interactive boards that support brainstorming, discussion, resource sharing, reflection, content curation, and formative assessment.

ITTD manages a limited number of Padlet licenses for faculty. Contact ITTD to ask about license availability before building a required course activity.

Determine whether students will post anonymously or with identification.
Review privacy and sharing settings before distributing the board.
Provide posting, commenting, and file-upload expectations.
Review accessibility and alternative-participation needs.
Do not require students to purchase an individual license unless formally approved.

Qwickly Course Tools

Qwickly Course Tools may allow faculty to work across multiple courses, post announcements, email students, and review course items requiring attention.

Availability and location may differ in Canvas. Use Qwickly only when it appears as an approved and enabled course tool.

Qwickly Attendance

Qwickly Attendance may allow instructors to take attendance, maintain attendance records, or permit students to complete a timed check-in from a personal device.

Configure attendance settings before the first required check-in.
Explain attendance and check-in expectations to students.
Test the student check-in process.
Review attendance records regularly.
Correct attendance records according to the course attendance policy.
Provide an alternative process for approved accommodations or technical problems.

Surveys, Research, and Interactive Content

Qualtrics

Qualtrics is a web-based survey platform available to faculty, staff, and students. It may be used for approved teaching, assessment, feedback, administrative, and research activities.

Access: Go to ncat.qualtrics.com and sign in using OneID credentials.

Determine the survey’s purpose and intended audience.
Use appropriate question types and response settings.
Test survey logic, display conditions, and notifications.
Review privacy, confidentiality, data-storage, and sharing settings.
Do not collect restricted information unless authorized.
Follow Institutional Review Board requirements for research involving human participants.

Access Qualtrics

SoftChalk Cloud

SoftChalk Cloud is an interactive lesson-creation tool that can be used to transform course materials into web-based learning activities.

Faculty may use SoftChalk to create lessons with text, media, checks for understanding, and other interactive elements. Lessons may be linked or embedded in the learning management system when supported.

Contact ITTD for account activation and current licensing information before creating required course content.

Assessment, Exam, and Originality Tools

Respondus Exam-Creation Software

Respondus exam-creation software may be used to create and manage assessment questions and publish supported assessments to the learning management system.

The Respondus exam-creation application is available only for Windows.
Installation requires administrative access to the computer.
A university computer may require installation assistance.
Contact ITTD for current software-package and installation-password information.
Review imported questions and settings before publishing an assessment.

Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser creates a restricted testing environment that limits access to other websites, applications, printing, copying, screen capture, and standard browser functions.

Enable LockDown Browser only for assessments that require it.
Provide students with the North Carolina A&T-specific download link.
Provide a practice assessment before the graded assessment.
Explain supported-device and installation requirements.
Identify options for students without an appropriate device.
Do not assume that a mobile phone will support the assessment.
ALEKS uses a separate version of LockDown Browser.

Respondus Monitor

Respondus Monitor may be used with LockDown Browser to record a student’s webcam and microphone during an online assessment.

Review current university guidance before requiring recorded monitoring.
Provide students with clear notice of webcam, microphone, identification, and environment requirements.
Provide a practice assessment and technical-readiness instructions.
Review accommodation and alternative-testing needs.
Securely review and handle recorded assessment information.
Do not share monitoring recordings outside the authorized process.

SafeAssign

SafeAssign is an originality-checking tool that compares submitted work with available sources and produces an originality report when the tool is enabled for an assignment.

Confirm that SafeAssign or the applicable originality tool is available in Canvas.
Explain to students how originality reports will be used.
Review the report rather than relying only on the percentage score.
Consider quoted material, references, common phrases, and assignment requirements.
Follow university academic-integrity and due-process requirements.
Provide clear instructions about drafts, resubmissions, and student access to reports.

Important: An originality score is not automatically a determination of plagiarism. The instructor must evaluate the report and the submitted work.

Professional Development and Training Resources

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning provides faculty and staff with on-demand courses covering technology, business, creative skills, professional development, instructional tools, certifications, and other topics.

Access: Go to linkedinlearning.ncat.edu and sign in using university credentials.

Faculty may also use approved LinkedIn Learning content to supplement a Canvas course when the integration is available.

ITTD may provide workshops, individual consultations, instructional-design guidance, tool demonstrations, and training for supported academic technologies. Visit learn.ncat.edu for the calendar of currently scheduled trainings.

Troubleshooting and Support

If You Cannot Access or Use a Tool

Confirm that you are using the correct university OneID credentials.
Verify whether the tool must be accessed directly or from Canvas.
Confirm that the tool is enabled and published in the correct course.
Sign out, close the browser, and sign in again.
Use a current supported browser.
Clear the browser cache and cookies or try a private browser window.
Allow required pop-ups, cookies, camera, and microphone permissions.
Check for software and operating-system updates.
Test whether the issue affects one course, one user, or all users.
Capture the complete error message and screenshots.

IT Service Desk: OneID, sign-in, browser, software installation, access errors, and general technical problems.
Vendor support: Product-specific documentation and troubleshooting when directed.
