Student Email Migration: Google Workspace to Microsoft 365

Overview

NC A&T is moving student accounts from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365. After the migration, student accounts will use Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, and other Microsoft 365 tools.

What You Need to Know
  • Your student email address stays the same.
  • Your email messages and folder structure will transfer automatically.
    • There are restrictions on certain file types. See the FAQs below for instructions to manually download files to ensure all files can be migrated.
  • Your calendar events will need to be manually transferred. See the FAQs below for instructions.
  • You should download any files you want to keep before the migration date.
What to Do Before Migration
  • Download important files from Google Drive.
  • Save Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in Microsoft format when possible.
  • Write down any Gmail filters or forwarding rules you want to recreate in Outlook.
  • Check any apps that use your Google account sign-in, since you may need to update those logins after migration.
  • Download calendar events to transfer to Microsoft 365.
How to Access Microsoft 365
  • Go to portal.office.com and sign in with your student email and university password.
  • Download Outlook, OneDrive, and Teams if needed.
  • Install Microsoft 365 desktop apps from portal.office.com > Install Office if needed.

  • Google Drive access ends: TBD
  • Migration begins: May 11, 2026
  • Microsoft 365 goes live: May 29, 2026

FAQs

The following questions address common issues and concerns related to the migration.

Q: Will all my emails and data be synced?

A: Yes, all emails from your Gmail account will be synchronized to your Outlook account.

Q: How can I transfer my files from Google Drive to OneDrive?

A: Files will automatically be transferred from Google Drive to OneDrive. If you encounter any issues, please contact the ITS Service Center.

Q: Will I still have access to my Gmail inbox?

A: Eventually, students will no longer have access to Gmail and will use Outlook as their primary email platform.

Q: Can I still use my @aggies.ncat.edu address?

A: Yes. Your email address remains the same; only the platform changes from Gmail to Outlook.

Q: Does my calendar transfer automatically?

A: No, but the transfer process is straightforward:

1. In Google Calendar, go to Settings > Import & Export and select Export.

2. In Outlook Calendar, select Add Calendar > Upload from File, browse to the exported file, and import it.
