What is Canvas?
Canvas is a web-based learning management system used to deliver course materials, assignments, assessments, discussions, grades, announcements, videos, communications, and other teaching and learning activities.
Why is North Carolina A&T transitioning from Blackboard to Canvas?
The UNC System Board of Governors selected Canvas as the standardized learning management system for UNC institutions. The transition promotes consistency, collaboration, and cost efficiency across the UNC System.
When will the transition take place?
Canvas becomes North Carolina A&T’s course-delivery platform beginning Fall 2026. Course delivery in Blackboard ends when Canvas goes live for Fall 2026.
Who is managing the transition?
The transition is led by Instructional Technology Training and Development within Information Technology Services in collaboration with Academic Affairs, faculty representatives, and the Canvas implementation team.
Will Blackboard go away completely?
Blackboard will no longer be used for course delivery beginning Fall 2026. Authorized instructors, staff, and administrators will retain limited access for approved data retrieval and course exports through June 30, 2027. Previous Blackboard courses remain unavailable to students.
Can students, faculty, and staff access Canvas now?
Yes. University users can access Canvas now. Available courses and organizations depend on the user’s role, enrollment, assignment, course start date, and publication status.
